Born and raised in Conventry, UK, you might expect 24 year old Daniel Brooks to make 2 Tone or Dubstep. Instead, he writes gentle, evocative ambient songs under the name Musique Pour Des Montagnes (which translates to "Music from the Mountains") whose sound reminds of artists such as Brian Eno, Dntel, and M83.
The Things of Vanity EP, Brooks' first release for Output Noise Records, collects five tracks written and recorded during his father's struggle with lung cancer. The complex mixture of emotions from such an experience are expressed throughout the EP, all without using any words. Utilizing tense reverberated piano chords and lush washes of synthesizers, Brooks creates aural landscapes that often sound conflicted, regretful, hopeful, and serene all at once. Though short, the Things of Vanity EP is a world unto itself worth repeated explorations.
